Poly(o-ethoxyaniline) (POEA), a polyaniline derivative, has been chemically synthesized for the fabrication of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. Good quality films were only obtained when acidic subphases were employed, owing to the doping process the polymer molecules suffer. Monolayers spread on aqueous solutions containing different concentrations of e.g. trifluoroacetic (TFA) and hydrochloric acid possess high collapse pressures and excellent stability. Different types (Y or Z) of LB films were produced depending on the conditions of film preparation and on the type of substrate. The highest quality films are Z-type LB films deposited on BK7 glass, especially if the polymer is pre-doped in TFA. The as-deposited LB films are already in the doped state, as confirmed by UV-visible absorption measurements. |
